I'm building a 1440p gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 7700X and 32GB of DDR5 memory. My graphics card budget is capped at $400, and I'd like strong performance at 1440p with good value. I'm open to either AMD or NVIDIA, including used cards if that makes more sense.

For the best performance per dollar, check the used market for an RX 6800, RX 7800 XT, or RX 9060 XT 16GB. A used RTX 3080 or occasionally an RTX 3080 Ti can also fit the budget and deliver strong native 1440p performance, but check the card’s condition, power requirements, and remaining warranty.
The budget is difficult for new cards right now. The RX 9060 XT 16GB may be close to or above $400 depending on pricing, while newer higher-tier AMD and NVIDIA options are generally much more expensive. If you want to buy new, wait for a sale; otherwise, a carefully checked used RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800-class card is likely the better value.
The Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB is probably the strongest new option if you can find it under $400. It offers good price-to-performance and enough VRAM for modern games, although you may need to adjust settings in demanding titles when playing at native 1440p.
An RTX 3070 can handle 1440p reasonably well, but its 8GB of VRAM is becoming a limitation in some newer games. I’d favor a 12GB-or-larger card if possible, especially for a new build you plan to keep for several years.
Agreed. I picked up a 16GB model for about $370 recently, and it has been a very capable 1440p card.
