What is a Channel Service Unit and Should I Keep It?

While cleaning my office, I stumbled upon a box labeled 'spare CSU' and discovered it contains a Channel Service Unit (CSU). I've worked in this job for nearly 10 years and have never used it or seen anyone else use it. I suspect it's junk, but I'm curious if anyone has experience with these devices or knows what they're for. The CSU is in mint condition, but I haven't plugged it in yet. Should I consider keeping it for something, or is it best to toss it into the e-waste pile?

CSUs used to be pretty common for T1 lines. They link the Telco Smartjack to the router, but nowadays, most routers have built-in CSU/DSUs. It's like how many people don't even think about the switches in their routers anymore. That's how technology evolves, I guess!

If it's in mint condition, consider reaching out to some tech collectors or museums to see if they might be interested. That could be better than just tossing it!

An external CSU feels like a throwback! Are we really still in 2025? Anyway, if it’s new in box, it might be worth checking with IT collectors or telecom museums before sending it off to e-waste.
