What is BIOS and Why is it Important?

Hey everyone! I'm really trying to get a handle on everything I need to know for building my first PC. I've got a grasp on how components work together and terms like bottlenecking. However, I'm stuck on understanding what BIOS actually does. I've watched a 19-minute tutorial about building a PC and read through some articles, but I'm still confused about BIOS updates and what 'flashing' means. I know that BIOS might come pre-installed, but I want to get a better understanding so I know what to expect as I get started. Any insights would be awesome!

Think of BIOS as the very basic programming of your computer, even more fundamental than your OS. It's pre-installed and is essential for making sure your hardware functions properly. You typically need to update it if you're installing new parts like a CPU or RAM that the motherboard doesn’t initially support.

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. It's special software that runs the motherboard's core functions. Just like with any software, it's important to keep the BIOS updated. For instance, if a new CPU hits the market, the BIOS might need an update to support that new chip.

Thanks a ton for breaking that down! I really appreciate the clarity!

Exactly, BIOS comes pre-installed on your motherboard. It's kind of like the operating system for your hardware, coordinating everything you plug into the motherboard—like the CPU, RAM, SSD, and GPU. Occasionally, updates, or 'flashing,' are necessary to fix bugs or improve performance, especially when new hardware is released that needs support.

Just to add to that, many modern PCs actually use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of BIOS. UEFI is more advanced and user-friendly, but we still often call it BIOS. The terms are pretty interchangeable, just something to be aware of as you dive deeper into the build!
