I'm completely new to Linux and looking for recommendations for a lightweight and customizable distro that will run well on my older MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015). My specs are: 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 6000 with 1536 MB, and 251 GB flash storage. I also want it to be compatible with a good range of applications. Any suggestions?

MX Linux is also worth considering. It's user-friendly and performs well on lower-end machines, plus it has a variety of pre-installed tools that can help you get started.

Mint XFCE is definitely a great choice. It's one of the best lightweight distros for beginners. Just keep in mind that while all distros can be customized, the desktop environment really affects usability. If you need to run Windows applications, you might look into a project called Winboat, although I'm not sure how well it performs on your machine.

For a lightweight option, I'd suggest trying Linux Mint XFCE or Bodhi Linux 7.0 HWE. They both run well on older hardware and give you plenty of customization options without being too resource-heavy.
