What Linux Distribution Should I Choose for My Old Laptop?

I have an older laptop that used to run on Windows 10, but I've stopped using it because its performance is quite low (it only has 4 GB of RAM and limited disk space). I'm considering switching to a Linux distribution so I can practice and learn. What would be the best distro for my needs?

Mint is often a top recommendation for beginners. It’s solid and user-friendly, which makes it great for getting familiar with Linux. If you're ready to explore more, you might want to try Fedora or Debian as the next step up.

I really like Linux Mint! I installed it on a friend's PC with 6 GB of RAM and it runs beautifully, so 4 GB should be fine too.

Linux Mint sounds like a great choice! Their main version with the Cinnamon desktop is quite light, but if you find it slow, they also have a Mint Xfce edition designed for lower resource usage.

Consider making a multi-ISO live USB with Ventoy to test various distros you're interested in. With only 4 GB of RAM, you're likely to run into limits, so MX Linux could be a good choice as it's Debian-based and performs well on older hardware.

Look for a distribution with a smaller footprint like Alpine or Damn Small Linux. Using a lightweight desktop environment such as XFCE can make a big difference. If you have an SSD to use, that would help immensely!
