What mind mapping tools are best for visualizing file structures and workflows?

I'm a software developer intern trying to familiarize myself with a project system that lacks any documentation. My approach is to create a mind map or diagram that outlines how the files interact. I'm looking for suggestions on tools that can help me with this, particularly ones that emulate the Blender node systems. Any recommendations?

If your project has unit tests, those can be helpful to understand the code. If there aren't any, consider writing some to grasp how everything works. Personally, I really like using Obsidian since it also has an Excalidraw plugin for various diagrams.

I recommend CmapTools. It’s more generalized and allows you to create nodes and connect them easily, even if it’s not specifically for programming.

Hey! You might want to check out Graphito, which is a neat tool for mapping out structures. I’ve also used Excalidraw for quick sketches—it’s pretty visual and easy to use. Not sure if that’s technical enough for your needs, though. Let’s see if anyone else has more ideas!

Thanks for the mention! Just a heads up, manually creating these can get tedious depending on the project size, but there’s a VSCode extension that can automatically map out files. Can’t remember the name, though.

Excalidraw is awesome for a fast, visual approach! If you want something more structured, Mermaid or even basic diagrams in Obsidian can work well. Remember, the best map is one you’ll keep updating, so don't stress about making it perfect.
