What Nvidia GPU is the closest replacement for an RX 7800 XT?

I'm looking for a sensible replacement for my RX 7800 XT—not necessarily a major upgrade. I've been dealing with frequent crashes and repeated driver corruption despite trying different drivers, disabling overlays, and following various troubleshooting steps. The problems only go away temporarily, and I'm tired of dealing with them, so I'd prefer to switch back to Nvidia for a smoother experience. I don't live in the United States, so local pricing and availability will matter more than Micro Center deals. What Nvidia card would be the closest equivalent, and which models are worth considering if I want to keep 16 GB of VRAM?

Before replacing the card, it may be worth checking whether the crashes are caused by hardware rather than the drivers. Test with XMP or other memory overclocks disabled, check the power supply and cables, and try another GPU if possible. Faulty RAM, an unstable CPU or motherboard, a failing SSD, or a defective graphics card can all look like driver problems.

If you want to stay with the current card, some people have better results by sticking with a known-stable driver instead of installing every new release. Also make sure Windows and the graphics software aren’t automatically updating at the same time, since that can cause installation conflicts. Still, if you’ve already tested multiple clean driver versions and the crashes continue, switching brands is understandable.

I’ve tried both older stable drivers and newer releases, with and without a manufacturer-recommended undervolt, and the crashes eventually came back. I’ve also disabled overlays, so at this point I’d rather use Nvidia based on my previous experience with it.

An RTX 3080 or RTX 4070 would be in roughly the same performance range. The 4070 is usually the more practical option because it uses less power and has newer features, while a used 3080 can make sense if it is considerably cheaper.

The closest Nvidia equivalents are generally the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super. The right choice depends heavily on prices in your country. If keeping 16 GB of VRAM is important, look at the RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 5070 Ti, but both cost more and are faster than the 7800 XT.

The RTX 5070 Ti is not necessarily a bad choice if you specifically want 16 GB of VRAM, but it is a much more expensive step up than a 4070 or 4070 Super. Compare local pricing against the 4070 Ti Super and any similarly priced Radeon cards; the best value depends on what is actually available where you live.
