My current PC is about six years old and is starting to struggle. It has a Ryzen 3 3200G, GTX 1650, one 16GB DDR4 stick, and a basic 256GB SSD. I have roughly £1,000 to spend, preferably less, and I want an upgrade that will last several years. I mainly play at 1080p, so I am not particularly concerned about 1440p or 4K. I have tried planning the upgrade myself, but I either exceed my budget or get confused about compatibility and value. Which parts should I prioritize, and what would be a sensible upgrade path?

Your system can be improved in nearly every area, but the single 16GB stick is not necessarily a problem. If you can find another stick with the same capacity and specifications, adding it would give you 32GB and enable dual-channel memory. Check the exact speed and timings before buying, since matching closely is preferable.
For an AM4 upgrade, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D-class processor would be a major gaming improvement while letting you keep your existing motherboard, assuming the BIOS supports it. Pairing that with a modern 16GB graphics card such as the RX 9060 XT, a larger NVMe SSD, and a suitable power supply could give the machine a long useful life. Check your current PSU before buying anything; around 750W from a reputable model may be appropriate depending on the chosen graphics card.
A completely new platform is another possibility if you do not want to remain on AM4: a current-generation processor and motherboard, 32GB of DDR5, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, and a high-airflow case would make a clean long-term build. However, spending heavily on the platform while pairing it with a midrange 8GB graphics card may not be the best use of a £1,000 budget for 1080p gaming. Reusing your case, motherboard, memory, and storage where practical could leave more money for the GPU, which is likely to provide the biggest gaming improvement.
I would upgrade in stages. Start with the processor, preferably a compatible AM4 X3D model, then add a 512GB or larger NVMe SSD and another DDR4 stick matching your current module as closely as possible. After that, put the remaining budget toward the graphics card and replace the power supply if it is not powerful or reliable enough.
A 16GB RX 9060 XT looks like a strong value option for this budget. A 16GB RTX 5060 Ti could also work, but may cost noticeably more in the UK. Different memory brands can work together if the capacity, DDR generation, speed, and voltage are compatible, although an identical kit is the safest choice. Graphics-card brands generally use the same GPU, so performance differences are usually small; cooler quality, noise, factory overclocking, warranty, and price matter more.
The processor has definitely been overdue for an upgrade, so I am looking into the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. I will also check my power supply and compare the cost of the different graphics-card options.

I had completely forgotten that I could simply add another memory stick. I am also interested in the RX 9060 XT. Do brands such as Sapphire and Gigabyte make much difference, or is the performance basically the same?
