What Programming Skills Should I Focus On to Succeed in Hackathons and Build Great Projects?

I'm familiar with a few programming languages but often feel like it's not enough to compete effectively in hackathons or create impressive apps and websites. I've noticed that many winners seem to have a common set of skills, which leaves me feeling confused. I did manage to win a hackathon once, but I believe it was mostly because of my teammates. I have some knowledge of web development, but our team formed spontaneously, and they were focused on game development. To contribute, I had to quickly learn Unity and a bit of C#. However, I feel like I didn't contribute enough to really earn that win. I'd like to know what specific skills or programming languages I should focus on, and what kinds of projects I could build with them.

I recommend looking into Dart and Flutter! They allow you to build applications across Desktop, Web, and mobile platforms using the same code, which is super handy. Just a heads up, hackathons often place more importance on the presentation than on the actual functionality of your app. They want a convincing prototype!

You might want to check out Fortran. It's a little old-school but still has some unique applications. You can dive right in without any prerequisites, just keep an open mind!

Don’t overlook NextJS! It’s a fantastic framework to learn, especially if you’re already getting into React.
