What RAM Should I Upgrade To for My PC?

I have a PC with the following specs: an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card, a 12th gen Intel Core i7-12700F processor, and currently 16GB of RAM (2x8GB HyperX Fury DDR4). When I check the Task Manager, it shows I'm only using about 5GB of free RAM, and I'm looking to increase that amount. I've tried to figure out the RAM speed but couldn't find specific information. I understand that the RAM's capacity is limited by the processor, and that faster RAM might not really help if I'm bottlenecked by the slowest stick. I could use some advice on what to do next to improve my RAM capacity.

First off, it's important to check if you currently have 2x4GB or 1x8GB sticks of RAM. Since you mentioned you have 2 sticks of 8GB, you're good on that front! To upgrade, just search for your RAM's model number online to find its speed. It's likely that you have DDR4-3200, which is quite common with setups like yours. I suggest going for a total of 32GB by adding another 2 sticks of 8GB DDR4-3200 or replacing your current sticks with 2x16GB. Don’t worry too much about MHz; they will sync to the lowest speed automatically. The key is to increase your total RAM capacity, which should fix your issue with low available memory.

Got it, thanks for the heads up! I think I’ll just grab an additional 2x8GB to keep it simple.

If you're looking for a straightforward solution, I recommend just going ahead and buying a total of 32GB DDR4. You can often sell your old RAM to help offset the cost. The important thing is ensuring compatibility; most modern RAM sticks should work fine together, especially if they are all DDR4!

Thanks, that's reassuring! I didn't want to worry about compatibility issues.

You might have DDR4-3200 HyperX Fury if that’s a common choice in models released around the Intel i7-12700F era. The best strategy is to go for 32GB. If your motherboard has four slots, you can add another 2x8GB kit or replace your current setup with 2x16GB. Remember, it's more about having enough RAM than the specific MHz rating at this point.

Thanks! I think I'm leaning toward adding the 2x8GB just to keep things straightforward.
