So, my mom unplugged our family computer, thinking it was turned off, but it was actually running a 'chkdsk /f /r' on Windows 10. Now, it won't turn on anymore. I'm not home right now, but I plan to check it out later. How bad is this situation and what can I do to fix it?

Honestly, it’s frustrating when people unplug devices without checking. The computer might just need a little love, and recovery options are out there like booting from a USB. But yeah, definitely consider getting an Advanced Power Strip next time to minimize risks like this. It can help keep your peripherals in check!

Totally get that! And it's a good call to educate the family about how technology works.

This might not be as bad as it seems! Microsoft says that unplugging a computer mid-chkdsk usually doesn’t cause additional issues. However, to avoid this in the future, maybe put a note on the monitor for your mom saying it's not really off when it appears to be. And seriously, why not use a power strip with a switch?

Don't stress too much! If the computer isn't turning on, there are a couple of things you can try. First, create a bootable USB drive with Windows 10 using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. Once booted from the USB, you should see an option to repair your installation. If that doesn't work, you might need to remove the hard drive and connect it to another PC or a USB adapter to recover your files before doing a clean reinstall of Windows.
