About a month ago, my MacBook was stolen. I reported it to the police and even tracked it down using Find My, but they couldn't help me with that. Eventually, I accepted I had lost it and wiped the device from my phone. But today, as I was browsing Facebook Marketplace for a new laptop, I saw a listing that matches my MacBook perfectly – my specific charger and even unique stains. The only thing is, the seller has blacked out the serial number. I'm contemplating setting up a meeting to confirm the serial number and possibly alert the police, but I'm unsure how to approach this. What's the best course of action? Should I try to covertly ask for the serial number, or is there a way to remove the blackout?

It's a good idea to inform a detective about this update. They may guide you better on how to handle the meeting or what steps to take next.
I suggest calling the police first before meeting up. If you can arrange a safe location, they might be willing to come with you. Bringing friends for backup could also be a good idea if you do decide to go that route.
Meeting up can be risky, but I know someone who confronted the seller and got their laptop back by threatening them. I don’t recommend it though; the potential for things to go wrong is high.
You might want to just ask the seller if they take Venmo. Pay them for the laptop and then dispute the charge later. It's a risky move, but could work if you get the laptop.
If you set up a meeting at the police station 'for everyone's safety', they might help you. Talking to a sergeant there could provide you with a more experienced perspective on handling the situation.
I probably should’ve asked for a sergeant when I first called the police, I didn’t know you could do that.
You could mention to the seller: "Can we meet up behind the police station for my safety?" That could add a layer of safety.
