Hey everyone! So, lightning struck my yard recently, and now I'm having issues with my Ethernet port. In Device Manager, I see a yellow triangle on my Ethernet connection, and obviously, I can't update it because I'm not connected to the internet. I can't find a reinstall option either, so I'm lost on what to do next. I recently got a new router, and a technician came out to reset everything, so I know it's not the cables since they work fine with my Xbox. Just to give you some context: I'm on Windows 10, using an Intel i7-7700k processor with an Asus Prime Z270 motherboard. If the port is fried, what do I need to replace? Is a Wi-Fi adapter an easier or cheaper fix? Everything else works great and is on a surge protector, so at least my PC isn't completely dead. Also, I've been trying a network reset through various methods, including uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Any thoughts?

If your Ethernet port is indeed fried, you'll need a Network Interface Card (NIC). It's a pretty inexpensive fix, just make sure you have an available slot on your motherboard. Alternatively, you could opt for a USB Wi-Fi adapter if you want to go wireless. They’re also quite affordable!
Honestly, just buy a USB Ethernet adapter. They're super cheap and easy to find. You’re lucky your whole computer wasn't affected by the lightning strike!
Ordered one already! I had no idea Ethernet adapters were so convenient now. Thanks!
It sounds like your Ethernet port may be dead. But check this out: if you have a spare USB stick, you can verify it by trying a live Linux distro like Linux Mint or Ubuntu. Just download the ISO, use Rufus to write it to the USB, and boot from it. If the Ethernet works in Linux, it’s a software issue; if not, your port is likely fried. If that’s the case, getting a new network card is a good route to take. Just be sure to visually check your motherboard for available slots. You could also use a USB dock with Ethernet support. They're a good budget-friendly option. Also, if you need to download drivers and have no internet, consider using USB tethering from your smartphone to get a quick connection for updates.
You’re the best. Thanks for the help!
Or just grab a USB or USB-C to Ethernet adapter; you can get some good speeds that way!
