What should I do if my phone got water damage and won’t turn on?

My brother accidentally spilled water on his phone while he was sleeping, and it sat in the water for about five hours before we noticed. We put it in rice for the day and even used a hairdryer to blow air into the charging port, but it still won't turn on. Does anyone have any advice on what to do next?

First off, what kind of phone is it? If the device was powered on when it got wet, trying to turn it on now could lead to more damage. Ideally, if it was off when it happened and you could have disassembled it right away, that might have saved it. But if it’s already been sitting with water damage, you might need to consider taking it to a repair shop, as rice isn’t very effective. Leaving it in a warm, dry place for a few days could help too, but there's a chance it might be too late already.

Definitely don't turn it on or try to open it yourself. If you're not equipped with the right tools, like a pentalobe screwdriver, you might end up damaging it even more. Take it to a professional repair service as soon as possible. It might just be the battery that's ruined, but you don't want to risk hurting the logic board.
