What Should I Know About .msi Files After Downloading One?

I recently tried to download a video from a website that I found on YouTube, and I ended up clicking on a pop-up that caused a file with the extension .msi to download to my computer. I've never encountered this file type before, and I'm worried about whether it could harm my system. I didn't open the file at all and just deleted it right away. I also ran a scan with AVG, which showed no issues. Should I be concerned about anything, or is my computer likely fine?

You're probably safe since you didn't run the file and just trashed it. .msi files are Microsoft Installer files, kind of like .exe files. They’re typically used for installations and aren't inherently dangerous unless they come from untrustworthy sources.

MSI files can be used for legitimate software installations, but yeah, always be cautious about where you download from. If you're unsure, you can do further research on how Microsoft Installer files work and make sure you’re downloading safely next time.

If you deleted the .msi file and ran a virus scan that's clean, you're good. Just remember to avoid clicking on pop-ups in the future! They can lead to unexpected downloads.

Dude, don’t click on pop-ups! They can lead you to some sketchy stuff. But since you deleted the file without opening it, you're likely in the clear.
