What Should I Look For When Buying a Gaming PC?

I'm helping my boyfriend find a gaming PC, but I don't know much about computers. He wants to play games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Outlast Trials, and perhaps more demanding ones like Call of Duty or Black Ops. He might also have multiple tabs open since he's going back to school soon. I want to ensure he gets a good PC without overspending, but I'm unsure what to look for.

He saw a prebuilt PC for around $700 at Best Buy with 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, an AMD processor, and an RTX 6500 TX graphics card, but I'm worried it might not handle more complex games well. I want suggestions on specs to consider like graphics cards and RAM, or even if we should build one instead.

Also, since he's aiming closer to $1,000, are there better options out there?

For about $1,000, you could get a great build with a 7500X3D processor and 9060XT 16GB GPU from Microcenter. It comes with 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM—fantastic value for gaming. Just keep it to 1080p for the best experience!

If there's a Microcenter near you, I recommend checking them out for prebuilt PCs. Their $700 PC is impressive, especially if it features an RX 7600 instead of the RTX 6500 TX. That upgrade would significantly benefit gameplay, especially for modern titles.

Honestly, for a $700 budget, the RX 6500 XT is lacking. I'd go for a setup with at least an RTX 4000/5000 series or RX 9000 series graphics card. Aim for 16GB of RAM, but 32GB is even better if budget allows. Plus, make sure it has a 1TB SSD and a decent CPU.

The PC you mentioned doesn't sound ideal for your boyfriend's needs, especially with that graphics card. If he builds his own PC, spending an extra $200 could get him a solid machine, and it could be a cool project for you both to tackle together.
