What to Know When Upgrading from a 10700K to a 14700KF?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to upgrade from my old Intel 10700K CPU to the new 14700KF. I've also recently snagged a 5090 FE graphics card, which is fantastic, but I've been noticing my CPU really struggles in heavy games like Assassin's Creed where the open world tends to hit the CPU hard.

My current motherboard is an Asrock Phantom Z490, and to use newer Intel processors, I'd have to get a new one. That means I'd also need new DDR5 RAM, but it's super expensive, and I prefer to keep using my DDR4 RAM. So, I chose the Asus Pro Z790 P motherboard that supports DDR4.

I'm curious about what I should keep in mind when swapping out the motherboard and CPU. I have a friend helping clear up the installation, but I want to be prepared. Also, how well will this CPU/GPU combo work with DDR4? I know DDR5 is superior, but how much of a performance difference will it make in gaming?

You’re going to notice a nice performance boost with the new CPU! Newer games really hit the CPU hard, so much of the workload isn’t just on the GPU like many think. Just uninstall any old software related to your previous motherboard for a smooth setup, swap the CPU and mobo, and ensure all your RAM is seated properly. After that, download the new drivers and enable XMP if you can. I had an easy time upgrading from an Intel 10900 to my new setup, so it should be a breeze for you too!

To prep for your upgrade, definitely update the BIOS on your new motherboard before you install the CPU. It can help with compatibility and performance. Also, consider undervolting the CPU since it can run really hot if you don’t manage it. I have the same CPU and it’s been a game changer for me!

Undervolting isn't essential; just install it and start it up right away!

You can find a lot of comparisons online between DDR4 and DDR5. Most videos show differences of about 2-5% in real-world performance. Don’t worry too much about it, especially since Intel designed your setup to work well with DDR4. You made a smart choice!

I just upgraded to the 14700KF too! Make sure you update the BIOS after installation, and undervolting is a solid move; I’ve seen my temperatures drop significantly, peaking at around 78°C in stress tests.
