What to Look for When Buying an External Blu-ray Drive?

I'm looking to buy an external Blu-ray drive and I'm not quite sure what factors to consider. Can I pick any random drive, or do I need to stick to specific models? Also, if I want to burn my own Blu-rays, does any drive work with the right software?

I'm using SteamOS on a Steam Deck. Has anyone had experience with external Blu-ray drives? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Are you planning to play Blu-ray movies on a Linux machine? That’s probably a big factor to keep in mind!

I haven’t personally used one with a Steam Deck, but I've had good luck with external Blu-ray drives on Fedora. The key is to think about your needs. If you're looking to rip certain types of discs, you might need a specific brand or firmware. For just watching movies, most should work just fine!

Thanks for the insight! I mostly just want to watch movies now, but I might make my own discs later.
