What type of cable do I need to connect my router?

I recently bought a 10m Ethernet cable to relocate my router to the living room. However, I noticed that the cable I have looks similar to an Ethernet cable but it's smaller. It fits into the WAN port, but that's not the connection I need. Can anyone help me identify the correct type of cable I should be using?

It sounds like you might have accidentally purchased an RJ11 cable, which is commonly used for phone lines. It's smaller than the RJ45 connector of a standard Ethernet cable. If that's the case, you definitely need to swap it for an RJ45 Ethernet cable so you can connect your router properly. If you can return it, just explain you got the wrong type and you should be able to exchange it easily.

Yep! Easy mistake to make. Just grab an RJ45 cable—it'll make your life easier!

Just to add, RJ11 cables are definitely narrower and meant for phone connections. You're right to be confused because they do look similar. If you have a picture of what you bought, that could be helpful for confirming!

Exactly, just check that the connector matches what you need. Good luck!

If you’re unsure about the cable, check the make and model of your router. It might help narrow down what you actually need. But from what you described, yeah, an RJ11 cable will not work for your router's internet connection.
