What Upgrades Should I Consider for My 6-Year-Old PC?

I'm currently using a Mac Mini for 4K video editing since my 6-year-old PC struggles with the footage. However, I'm curious if I can breathe new life into the old machine. Here's what I'm working with:

- Ryzen 5 2600
- MSI B450-A PRO
- 16GB DDR4-3000
- RX 580 4GB
- 250GB SATA SSD (for the OS)
- 2TB SSD
- 2x 1TB HDDs
- 6TB HDD
- 550W PSU

I'm thinking of repurposing this PC for a couple of things:
1. Use it as a local backup/storage machine, which would be secondary to my existing SSD enclosure and NAS for the Mac.
2. Let my girlfriend use it for playing The Sims.

My main frustrations with the current setup are the lack of USB-C and built-in WiFi. Since I've solved the 4K editing issue with the Mac, I'm contemplating whether to upgrade to a motherboard with USB-C and WiFi, or if I should just add expansion cards instead. Is it worthwhile to upgrade anything else? I'm piecing together advice from various threads, so any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Another option is to grab a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU and an RX 7600 8GB graphics card. These upgrades could turn your setup into a capable 1080p ultra gaming machine! Your current motherboard supports the Ryzen 5 5600 with a BIOS update, and your PSU can handle both components. That upgrade might even help with video editing again.

That's very helpful to know, thank you!

Going with expansion cards is definitely a smarter move here. Since you have a full ATX board, it's super easy to add. A new motherboard with USB-C and WiFi might cost you double what a couple of expansion cards would. Plus, there’s a lot you can still do with your old PC—turning it into an HTPC or a Plex server could be fun!

You might consider adding another 6TB hard drive if you're aiming for a solid starter NAS setup. I have a small desktop with a Ryzen 5600G that runs on a B450 motherboard hosting a Jellyfin server, and it works great for storing all my files! Consider getting some quality hard drives for your storage.
