What Upgrades Should I Make for My Old Gaming PC?

I bought a Skytech Gaming Chronos Mini back in 2020 featuring an Intel Core i3 10100F and a GTX 1650, but now I'm finding it struggles with newer games, especially shooters. I'm considering upgrading to an Intel Core i5 13600KF and an RTX 3050, both around $200 each. However, I've heard my current motherboard limits upgrades, and I'm unsure about my RAM too. Can anyone suggest the best path forward for upgrades?

It sounds like you're in a tough spot with your current setup. The problem is that your B560 motherboard only supports 10th and 11th generation Intel CPUs. If you want to upgrade the CPU, you'll likely need a new motherboard too. Plus, upgrading from 8GB of RAM to at least 16GB would be a smart move. Unfortunately, your PC was already a bit outdated when you bought it, so consider that if you're investing more money in upgrades.

Honestly, your CPU isn't the worst, but your GPU is definitely holding you back. The RTX 3050 isn't that great for gaming either. It really depends on what games you want to play. If you're after performance for modern shooters, I'd recommend looking at other GPUs as well. Maybe think about options around the same price that offer better performance?

You're right to be cautious about the 13600KF; it's a newer socket (LGA1700) compared to your LGA1200 setup. A better option might be to look for a solid CPU for your generation, like the i5 10600K, which is cheaper now on the used market. If you're looking to upgrade your GPU, I would suggest the RX 6600 or maybe even a used RTX 2070 Super, which could give you the bump you need without breaking the bank.

Yeah, definitely avoid the 3050 if you're serious about gaming! The RX 6600 has been getting good feedback, and you can often find those deals in the used market too!

Rather than piecemeal upgrades, you might want to consider a new pre-built system. The upgrades you need—like a new GPU, motherboard, and possibly a power supply—can add up quickly. Plus, if you don't have the right case sizes or connectors, it gets tricky. You might find some decent pre-builts around $1,000 soon with Prime Day deals coming up, which could save you a lot of hassle.
