What Upgrades Should I Make for My PC After 5 Years?

Hey everyone! I built my PC about 5 years ago with some great advice, but I've lost track of tech advancements since then. Recently, after the Ark: Ascended update with Unreal Engine 5.5, my GPU has been overheating and shutting down my system at over 110 degrees. I've tried undervolting but that hasn't helped much. I was thinking about just upgrading my GPU to a 5060 Ti since it seems decent and easy to find, but I later learned that my motherboard won't support that. I could really use some advice on what I should upgrade and what parts I might still be able to reuse. I'm a casual gamer, so I'm not looking for top-of-the-line performance, but I'd like my setup to last a few more years without breaking the bank. My budget is around £1000-£1500, but I'd prefer to stay closer to £1000. Here's what I currently have: MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk Wifi, AMD Ryzen 7 3700 X, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, Corsair RM750 PSU, Samsung SSD 970 Evo Plus 1TB, Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR4 3600 (4 x 8GB), Nzxt Kraken X53 240mm cooler, and 5 Corsair LL120 fans. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Just to clarify, if your motherboard is PCIe 4.0, you can still use a PCIe 5.0 GPU without any issues. So, you could still go for that 5060 Ti! For a good upgrade, I suggest the 5700X3D, a new SSD, and the 9070XT. No need to jump to AM5 just yet! Here’s a possible build: [link]

I didn’t realize the backward compatibility, that’s super helpful! Thanks for the info. 😀

First off, which version of the 5700 XT do you have? Some models had issues with heatsink contact that could cause overheating like you described. 110C isn’t normal for a properly functioning card! For upgrades, consider going with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and an RTX 5070 for a good price-to-performance ratio. If you don't mind spending a bit more, the 9070XT is a solid choice too! Thanks for responding! I have the Gigabyte RX 5700 XT. It's always run a bit hot, but these temps seem excessive.

You might want to think about renewing the thermal paste and thermal pads on your GPU. That could be why it’s overheating in the first place!

You should definitely think about a new CPU and GPU, like the 5700X3D paired with a 9070XT for an effective upgrade. Also, don’t overlook the importance of a new SSD as well!

A new SSD is something I'd consider too. Thanks for the tip!

With your budget, you could definitely upgrade to the AM5 platform and get a new GPU while reusing your case, PSU, and storage. Here’s a compatibility list that could work well for you: [link]. The AM5 upgrade might offer better future-proofing, so consider that!

Thanks for the list! Do you think the AM5 upgrade is really worth it in terms of future-proofing?
