What’s the Best AMD Motherboard for Gaming and Creative Work?

I'm planning to build my first AMD system, moving away from Intel. I'm eyeing the AMD 9800 and 9950 CPUs, as I want a solid setup for gaming, art, video editing, Blender modeling, and streaming. My experience with the Gigabyte Z790 hasn't been great—especially concerning secure boot—so I want to choose a motherboard wisely this time. I'm looking for options under $400. Also, I'm aiming to air cool my system with a Fractal Torrent case and NH-D15 cooler. What do you all recommend?

When picking a motherboard, focus on I/O features that match your specific needs. You don’t necessarily need a high-end board; even a $200 B850 can perform similarly to a $400 one. Identify what features matter to you and go from there!

Honestly, there's no need to exceed $250 on a motherboard unless you require specific features. High-end boards like the MSI Godlike are often just marketing hype. Check out options like the MSI X670 Gaming Plus or ASUS X670 AYW Gaming—both are reliable for the 9950X3D.

The best motherboard really comes down to what you need and your budget. For the 9800X3D, a decent B650 or B850 will work well. However, for a 9950X3D, I’d suggest getting a good B850 or an X670 board for better features. Make sure to consider what you'll need—things like NVMe slots and USB 4.0—and ensure the VRMs are a good fit for your CPU!

What's the main difference between the X670 and the B850? That might help me decide!
