What’s the best CPU upgrade for LGA1700 if I’m CPU-bound in VR?

Hey everyone! I'm feeling CPU-bound while playing VRChat with my Intel 12400F, and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU for better performance. I initially thought about going for an AMD X3D chip, but I've run into a couple of issues: first, the AM4 X3D processors are ridiculously priced in the second-hand market, and second, opting for an AM5 setup means I'd have to switch to DDR5 memory, which isn't ideal right now. So, I'm left with my LGA1700 motherboard that supports DDR4. I've been eyeing the 14600KF as a potential upgrade, but I'd love to hear your thoughts before I make a decision. Thanks a lot!

Definitely consider the 14600 or 14700. Whether you choose F or KF, both are solid picks. Just keep cooling in mind!

Honestly, if you have a good cooler and are ready to search the second-hand market, I’d suggest aiming for a 14th gen i7 or i9. They're the best options for LGA1700, and if you find a sealed box and your motherboard’s firmware is up to date, you won’t have to worry about issues.

I did get a better cooler that I haven’t put on yet. But I'm cautious about browsing second-hand options because of possible oxidation. I suspect a sealed box might still cost a fortune.

Yeah, going for the 14600KF or even the 14700KF might be worth your while, especially if the price difference isn’t too steep—around $50 or so. Just a heads up: these chips can run pretty hot, so ensure you have a decent air cooler or an AIO installed.

I’ve got a cooler ready to go, so no worries there. I’m just wary about potential oxidation issues with second-hand CPUs. The 14700KF is around £100 more, and even the 13700KF is a noticeable jump.

I looked around and found the 14700KF for about £100 more. My cooler is a Thermalright AXP90-X53, and I've read that it's a good fit for higher-end chips.

The 14600K or KF is definitely a solid choice for your setup! Just make sure that your motherboard can handle it. If you’re using a budget board, check the VRM cooling since some lower-end boards with CPUs like the 12400F don’t handle load well. Also, don’t forget to invest in a good cooler!

Heh, I’m a bit hesitant to share my motherboard model since I suspect my VRM might not be up to par. It’s a Gigabyte H610 ITX.
