I'm currently using an i5-9400f and am considering an upgrade to handle modern games better, especially heavily modded Minecraft. However, my motherboard is kind of dated, and I don't want to invest in a new one unless absolutely necessary. I've been looking at options on the supported CPU list for my B365M PRO-VDH motherboard, particularly the i9-9900K/KF and i7-9700K/KF. Which of these would you recommend?

Honestly, I've got to say you might want to skip investing in those old CPUs. They’re overpriced for what they deliver compared to the performance available from newer models. It’s probably better to save up for a full upgrade including CPU, motherboard, and RAM. You'll get much better value in the long run!
I think you're better off upgrading the whole platform instead of just the CPU. For instance, the cheapest good CPU right now is over $300, and that money could go way further if you went for a full rebuild. Plus, new CPUs, like the 13th or 14th generation, will outperform those old i9s in multicore tasks, which is crucial for gaming, especially Minecraft with mods. Just something to consider!
I get your point, but are you implying OP should buy everything new? What if they just want a slightly better CPU now?
