My Ryzen 7 5800X is becoming a major bottleneck in BeamNG.drive, especially with around seven vehicles loaded. The game is heavily CPU-bound in my setup while my RTX 4070 Ti Super has plenty of headroom. The rest of the PC and my existing drives are in good shape, so I'd prefer not to replace the drives, erase everything, or perform a fresh Windows installation. If I upgrade to a newer CPU platform, can I simply uninstall the relevant drivers, swap the motherboard and processor, and install the new drivers afterward, or is that likely to cause Windows, activation, TPM, or BitLocker problems? Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D be the safer and more worthwhile option?

For this particular game, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is probably the simplest and most effective upgrade. BeamNG benefits from extra cache and additional CPU performance, and the 5800X3D has much more L3 cache than the 5800X. You can keep your current motherboard, RAM, drives, and Windows installation; just update the BIOS before replacing the processor and confirm that your board supports it.
A newer processor such as a Ryzen 7 9800X3D can often be installed while keeping the existing drives, but changing the motherboard is less predictable. Windows may need new chipset and storage drivers, activation can be affected because the license is commonly associated with the motherboard, and TPM or BitLocker can complicate the transition. It may work without a reinstall, but a clean installation is the safer route for a major platform change.
Before buying anything, try limiting the frame rate. When a game is CPU-bound, letting it render as many frames as possible can leave the simulation struggling and make performance feel worse. A frame cap can reduce CPU load and improve consistency, even if the GPU is barely being used.
I hadn’t considered frame limiting as a CPU-load issue rather than just a V-Sync setting. I’ll test that first.

That makes sense. I was hesitant to spend that much on an older platform, but replacing the CPU alone is a lot less hassle than moving to a new socket, motherboard, and RAM.
