What’s the Best Gaming Monitor for $400-$600?

I'm building a new gaming PC with a 9800X3D and a 5080, and I'm in the market for a new monitor. Currently, I'm using a 40" non-smart TV that's only 1080p at 60hz with 8bit color, so I definitely need an upgrade. My budget is between $400 and $600, and I'd love to snag a deal or perhaps a Steam gift card with it.

I'm specifically looking for a monitor with 120hz or 144hz support and a 1440p resolution; I'm not interested in 4K or anything above that. Freesync Pro or G-Sync is essential for me too.

I have a couple of options in mind:
1. A high-quality LCD panel, ideally with Pulsar technology for its lower persistence, but only if it fits in my budget. I'm curious about what features I should look for in LCD monitors, like backlight strobing—do most support this?
2. An HDR OLED monitor would be amazing, preferably with an RGB subpixel arrangement for better text and graphic work. I'll use HDR for gaming and open-source auto-HDR for casual play.

My main usage will include AAA games with variable frame rates (using either freesync or gsync), casual games that benefit from higher refresh rates or HDR, Photoshop (not in need of perfect color accuracy), and regular web browsing and documents. I'm wondering if sound bars are common with monitors as well.

Also, I found a monitor on Amazon that seems okay, but I'm unsure about its capabilities—it's HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4. Does this limit freesync or HDR performance? You might want to look for an Alienware 27" OLED that goes up to 1440p and 360hz; I've seen it go for around $550 when the deals are right. It completely changed my gaming experience!

Just a heads up, the Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor is also impressive—I don't need 360hz, but what's the best way to snag one for $500 now that they’re sold out from Dell?

I'll definitely keep this in mind. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but I’ll revisit it once my PC is built!

The only Pulsar monitors available right now are 27" LCDs. They’re good for competitive gaming if that's your thing, but if you don't play esports, a 32" could be a solid choice. Personally, I keep my monitor a bit over an arm's length away, and I find that 27" can feel a bit cramped.

I'm not into esports either, but that '3x the frame rate' experience sounds awesome! I love my OLED phone and a good LCD for VR—this would be a fun new experience, but I might need to wait for more Pulsar options due to the pricing and size.

You should check this roundup of recommended gaming monitors here: [Monitor Roundup](https://tftcentral.co.uk/recommendations/the-best-recommended-gaming-monitors-2026). I have a pair of studio monitors hooked up to my computer—not into soundbars myself.

Thanks for the link! I’ll check it out. Honestly, their larger monitors feel more like smart TVs. By the way, do most people really use soundbars? My last PC speakers were those cheap black boxes.

Check out the Acer Predator X27U Z1bmiiprx—it’s on sale for about $380 right now. Most OLEDs in this price range have issues with fringing right out of the box, but you might fix that a bit with Windows' ClearType setting.

Does it come with Freesync Premium Pro or just the standard version? I noticed its DisplayPort is only 1.4—is that a concern? I found it for around $400, though.
