I'm a beginner coming from a blue-collar background and want to build practical DevOps and Kubernetes experience using my homelab. The system has 256 GB of RAM, 8 TB of HDD storage, 2 TB of SSD storage, and runs Proxmox. I have beginner-to-intermediate Linux knowledge, some experience with Docker and Docker Compose, beginner Terraform and Ansible skills, and basic networking knowledge. I've also deployed K3s on one setup and have enough capacity to build another cluster with kubeadm for certification practice.
I'm deciding whether to use an AI assistant to help create a small metrics or work-tracking application while I focus on the operations side, or to find an existing example e-commerce application and use it as a learning project. Which approach would be more useful, and what topics should I prioritize? I'd also appreciate recommendations for tools and applications to deploy in the cluster or homelab.

For a broader homelab, consider AWX for running Ansible, FreeIPA for identity and DNS, cert-manager or another internal certificate authority for TLS, and HAProxy as a reverse proxy or load balancer. Keycloak can provide authentication for services and clusters. Keep your Ansible, Terraform, Kubernetes manifests, and application code in a Git server so every change is tracked and repeatable.
Don’t install everything at once. Start with Git, a simple app, containerization, Kubernetes deployments and services, ingress, monitoring, logging, and backups. Once that workflow is solid, add identity management and more advanced automation.
You don’t need to be an experienced programmer before starting. Use a small existing application or have an AI assistant generate one with a clear repository structure, then focus on understanding how it is built and operated. Keep the scope narrow and learn the basics of the application as you go. That gives you something realistic to containerize, deploy, monitor, upgrade, and troubleshoot.
I’d build a small application you control rather than choosing a complicated random e-commerce project. It only needs a simple frontend, API, and database. The important part is learning the entire lifecycle: containerize it, deploy it to Kubernetes, configure ingress and TLS, manage secrets, add CI/CD, collect metrics and logs, create backups, and deliberately break things so you can practice recovery.
Useful additions for the homelab include Prometheus and Grafana for metrics, Loki for logs, and Argo CD for GitOps deployments. You can look at Vault later once you’re comfortable with Kubernetes secrets. An AI assistant can help generate the application, but review and test everything it produces instead of treating it as a black box.

I don’t have any real coding experience yet, so I can’t always tell whether generated code is correct. I’ll probably start with a very small app and learn enough programming fundamentals to understand and verify each piece.
