I'm looking for recommendations on a lightweight Linux distribution that can handle gaming on my aging 2012 Asus U38N notebook. It has an AMD A8-4555M APU with Radeon HD Graphics running at 1.60 GHz and an AMD Radeon HD 7600G GPU, plus 4GB of RAM. I've dabbled with Linux before, but I'm struggling to find a good distro that can efficiently run Steam games.

Linux Mint XFCE is a solid option! It's lightweight and user-friendly, which might suit your needs well.

What specific games do you plan to play? Honestly, given the specs, I’m curious how well it’ll handle modern titles since this hardware isn't the best for gaming even when it was new.

I suggest trying Ubuntu MATE. It's pretty light and uses under 1GB of RAM. Just make sure to tweak Proton to run OpenGL instead of Vulkan, since your GPU doesn't support it. You'll need to edit the user_settings file to set 'PROTON_USE_WINED3D' to '1'—that should help a lot!
