What’s the Best NVMe Drive for Your Main System Right Now?

I'm planning a fresh installation of Windows soon, and I'm considering an upgrade from my current main drive, which really isn't cutting it. I've been eyeing the Samsung 990 Pro, but I'd love to know if there are better options for a similar price. I'm looking for a 2TB drive. Any recommendations?

It really depends on what you plan to do with your computer. If you're just browsing or casual gaming, you might not need to go for the top-tier drives. Something like the Western Digital SN7100 could be a solid choice and save you some cash.

I do a bit of everything—streaming, gaming, modeling, and video editing. My current drive was a rushed replacement from a repair shop, and it's definitely time for an upgrade.

I've been using a 990 Pro as my OS drive and it's been solid for about five years now. The DRAM cache is nice, but honestly, I think I would have been fine with a 990 Evo Plus. It does give great speed, though!

If you're considering Gen 4, the 4TB Kingston NV2 is an option, though not highly recommended for main drives. It’s more of a budget choice and gets mixed reviews; it could be okay for a secondary drive but might not perform well for your main system needs.

Yeah, I saw some negative reviews for the NV2. It's definitely priced low, but I wouldn't trust it for anything critical at all.

Pretty much any TLC gen 4/5 drive with cache should work fine. There are several good options that are budget-friendly, like the GM7000, P41, and SN7100. These are often cheaper than the 990 Pro and offer great performance too.

I got a couple of Crucial P310 2TB SSDs on sale recently, and so far, I've had no complaints with their performance. Great bang for your buck if you find them on sale!

The 990 Pro is a fantastic choice. If you find the 980 Pro available for less, that's also a great option. The WD Black SN850x is comparable in performance, along with the SK Hynix P41 Platinum. I prefer to use a high-end drive for my OS and key programs, then add cheaper drives for extra storage.

I personally use the WD Black SN750 and it works great for me. I also built a PC for my wife with the SN850 and both have been performing really well. If you're in the market for performance, those are solid choices.
