What’s the Best PSU for My AM4 Build and Future Upgrades?

Asked By TechWizard42 On

I have a PC with an AM4 setup using a 4080 Super and a 5800X3D processor, paired with a B650i gaming motherboard. My current power supply is a 650W model, and my PC has been shutting down unexpectedly. Given that my temperatures stay under 45 degrees, I'm suspecting the PSU might be the issue.

I'm not super tech-savvy, so I'm looking for advice on a more powerful PSU. If I want to future-proof my system, should I also consider upgrading to AM5? Additionally, I'm confused about ATX 3.0 versus ATX 3.1—does that change anything? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, a 650W PSU just isn’t enough for a 4080 Super. You’re right to be looking for an upgrade. I’d recommend a PSU in the 750W to 850W range for your current setup. But if you plan to upgrade your CPU or stick with high-performance components like the 80 or 90 series, go for a 1000W or even a 1200W PSU.

Check out the PSU tier list on HW Busters; anything in Tier A is solid. Corsair and Be Quiet are reliable brands, along with Asus and Seasonic.

Thanks for the advice! What about the ATX 3.0 vs 3.1 difference?
