I'm looking for an affordable option to create a portable NAS using Linux. I've seen some micro boards like the Raspberry Pi, but I'm concerned they may not perform well. What are my best options for a budget-friendly NAS that won't be a total dud? Any specific price range I should aim for?

I think the Raspberry Pi 5 with the 8GB RAM option actually holds up pretty well as a low-powered NAS. But if you're expecting higher performance, you might want to check out mini PCs instead.

Yeah, I've seen people use the same device for NAS and VMs. It's a bit odd, but it definitely works!
