I heard recently that support for older graphics cards, like my Radeon 6600 XT, might be coming to an end. Is that true? How will this impact users of the 6000 and 5000 series cards?

There was an announcement stating that while RDNA 1 and 2 will still receive updates, they won't be on the same schedule as the newer RX 7000 and RX 9000 series. It raises some concerns since splitting the drivers could mean less stable support in the long run. It's something to keep an eye on for sure!
Man, I'm really hoping they don't drop support soon. Upgrading isn't in my budget right now!
