What’s the Standard for On-Call Compensation in IT?

I'm curious about how companies handle on-call compensation these days. My current workplace wants me to join the on-call rotation, but their compensation seems pretty lacking. I won't be getting any standby pay—meaning no pay just for being on-call—and I'm only compensated if I actually have to respond to a call that results in work. For example, if I get a call at 2 AM but the client decides not to proceed, I don't get paid. Given that I would be on-call every 12 weeks, I'm really not keen on giving up my personal time without any compensation. I am interested in hearing how other companies manage on-call pay. I'm salaried, but there's also no compensation time unless I work excessively long hours. What's the norm?

I don’t have set on-call pay, and it’s all based on being a salaried employee. We do have a form of informal comp time, where if we’re busy on call, we can take some time off later to balance it out. But it really depends on how understanding management is about work-life balance.

Sounds like it can vary a lot based on the boss. I feel like those informal agreements can easily turn into assumptions over time.

Right? A good manager will respect your off-hours, but it varies hugely between workplaces.

I worked at a place where we got a fixed standby pay, plus extra for emergency calls. We usually got paid 1-2 hours just for responding, even if it took only a few minutes to fix the issue. It made the on-call stress way more bearable since the compensation made it worth my time. You gotta know your worth!

That sounds ideal—getting paid just for answering alerts is a game changer!

Exactly! If companies want you on call, they really shouldn't expect you to jump in for free.

You absolutely should be getting standby pay for being on-call, whether the calls come in or not. It’s a major disruption to your personal life, and companies need to recognize that. I’ve seen setups where you get paid a flat rate for every day you’re on-call, plus additional pay if you take a call. That seems much fairer to me.

I completely agree! When you’re on-call, you’re essentially working even if it’s just waiting by your phone. It’s a hassle for your personal life.

Exactly! It's exhausting to be on hold and not get compensated. If they want dedication, they better offer fair pay!

In my experience across various IT jobs, being on-call generally doesn't come with extra pay, especially if you're salaried. Most companies just bake it into the salary. You might get some time off if you're called in a lot, but it's usually informal and depends on your boss's discretion. So unfortunately, it sounds like just another reality in tech jobs.

Same here. I’ve never had formal on-call pay either. Getting to skip out early or take days off is about all you can hope for.

Wow, sounds familiar! Been in similar situations where they just expect you to be available without any perks.
