I'm curious to hear about the low-effort IT automation solutions that have made a meaningful impact for you. Specifically, I'm looking for examples where the automation wasn't overly complex but still saved a significant amount of time unexpectedly. This could include automations related to app access provisioning, backups, auditing, or managing ticket queues. What's something you've implemented that surprised you with its effectiveness?

I automated our SSL certificate renewals. It used to be a big hassle, but now it’s handled automatically, saving the team a lot of anxiety and time. The automation runs scripts that renew certificates without manual intervention, and it alerts us if there’s an issue. Automation like this makes it much smoother!
That’s a smart move. Automating cert renewals can definitely alleviate a lot of stress!
Last year, I whipped up a script that automatically created out-of-office appointments in Outlook based on approved vacations and corporate holidays. It was a simple solution, but it got me recognized during a company-wide meeting! Now everyone uses it, and it saves the HR team tons of time.
That’s super useful! Do you use Microsoft 365 for this?
I did something similar using PowerAutomate for my O365 calendar. It just simplifies everything!
When I worked for local government, I discovered that a Linux server needed to be rebooted daily at 9:15 PM. Initially, I was told I had to be there to do it myself, which was a hassle. So, I learned about cron jobs and set up an automated schedule to handle the reboot. I was able to leave 30 minutes earlier every night, which over ten years added up to nearly 15 extra days off! That small change really improved my work-life balance.
Did you set up a way to confirm the server rebooted properly afterward?
Seems wild that someone thought a manual reboot was necessary—glad you figured it out!
We used to have tons of manual work related to user account management. I set up automated processes that would trigger when HR added a new hire. It took about a week to set up, but now it saves countless hours every month. When you think about it, if it can save repetitive manual tasks, it's worth the effort!
What tools did you use for automating those processes?
Automating user management is such a game changer! I’m looking into doing the same.
At my old job in a hospital, we had a problematic piece of software that broke often, and we’d get tons of tickets. I created a batch script that fixed common issues, which turned daily tickets into about one every few months! It was a simple fix, but it saved our team a ton of time and hassle.
Sounds like that software was a real pain! What’s your take on those quick fixes?
That definitely sounds like something from healthcare! Weird how such a simple script could make such a big difference.

How did you set that up? Sounds time-saving!
