Which is Better for WiFi: PCIe Card or USB Dongle?

Hey folks! I'm trying to find the best method for getting reliable WiFi for my setup since I can't use Ethernet due to the router being too far away. I'm torn between getting a PCIe WiFi card or a USB WiFi dongle. I primarily use my PC for general work and browsing, so I'm wondering:

- Is there a noticeable difference in performance between these two options?
- Do WiFi cards really provide better latency and stronger signals?
- Are USB dongles likely to overheat or throttle during extended use?
- Any specific models I should look into?

Thanks for any tips you can provide!

I'm actually happy with a good USB dongle because I can use a long USB cable to position it where the reception is best. Some high-end PCIe cards have external antennas, though. In my experience, there's not much difference between PCIe and USB as long as you choose appropriate speeds and standards. Just remember, going for cheap options could lead to bad reception!

Honestly, for general use, it shouldn't make much of a difference. Also, powerline adapters could be another solid option if you're looking for alternatives!

If you're just using your PC for light stuff like web browsing, it really won't matter much. Just don’t go grabbing some $2 junk dongle from random websites; stick with reputable brands—you'll be fine!

I see you said the router's too far. Can you define 'too far'? Sounds like a situation that could be solved with a drill!

In my case, the router is downstairs while my PC is on the first floor. Running a long Ethernet cable through the door is tricky since it wouldn’t let the door close fully. I get decent WiFi on my laptop, so I’m leaning towards the WiFi solution for my PC too.

In my opinion, PCIe cards are the way to go. Go for one with an Intel chipset and make sure to pick a version that matches your router's WiFi standards. If you can, choose one with external antennas that can be positioned for better signal. Just a heads up, Ethernet is still top-notch, especially for gaming where latency really matters. Yeah, with a direct line of sight to a newer WiFi router, it's surprisingly effective. My router has a 1Gb/s port but supports WiFi 6e with 2.5Gb/s speeds. When my desktop antennas are aligned correctly, I usually get around 2.2Gb/s with super low pings! Definitely a great choice for accessing my homelab storage.
