I'm building my first PC and want to get the best performance possible without installing Windows. I'm still fairly new to Linux, although I've used Ubuntu, Ubuntu Lite, and Linux Mint for basic tasks before. Someone recommended Linux Lite, but I'm wondering what distribution would be the easiest and most reliable choice for gaming with an RTX 3060 8GB, Ryzen 5 5500, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

For a beginner gaming setup, Fedora KDE is a strong choice. It’s fast, stable, and KDE gives you a familiar desktop with plenty of customization. You may need to enable the appropriate NVIDIA drivers and multimedia codecs, but there are straightforward guides for both.

Linux Mint is probably the least stressful option if you already have some experience with it. It’s stable, user-friendly, and works well for gaming as long as the NVIDIA driver is installed correctly. You won’t necessarily get the newest updates immediately, but that can also make the system more dependable.

If you want something aimed more directly at gaming, Nobara or PikaOS may be convenient because they include gaming-related tweaks and make driver setup easier. They can be more immediately convenient than a general-purpose distribution, though a mainstream option like Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora usually has a larger support community.

Ubuntu is still worth considering for a first Linux gaming PC. It has broad hardware and software support, lots of beginner-focused documentation, and many troubleshooting answers available online. It may not be the most exciting choice, but it tends to be easy to maintain once everything is set up.

That’s why I still recommend it to newcomers too. Once the drivers and game launcher are configured, it’s easy to forget about the operating system and just use the computer without constant maintenance.
