I've been dealing with some serious performance issues since we upgraded to Edge 140 in our enterprise setup. I just noticed that Edge is now downloading a massive 330MB AI model file to each user's appdata folder at launch, and with up to 40 users accessing Edge on some of our servers through Citrix, this is really bogging down our network and PVS write cache.
I found out that you can disable these downloads using the GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings or ComponentUpdatesEnabled policies. I managed to apply the registry keys on a Windows 11 machine and it worked like a charm—no more downloads. However, when I tried to apply the same settings on Server OSes (2016, 2022, and 2025), it seems like the policies are being ignored since the file still downloads every time Edge starts up, even though edge://policy shows that the policies are recognized and there are no errors.
I haven't had this problem with Chrome; it isn't downloading any files at launch.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I totally feel your pain. We're dealing with a similar situation where over 1000 users are hitting the file server because of downloads. I appreciate the tip on the deactivation—I plan to try it on our server systems tomorrow. Fingers crossed it works for you too! 🤞
I ran some tests last Friday on server OS, and unfortunately, those policies didn’t work for me either. I didn’t get to try it on a Windows 11 VDI setup, but I’ve heard Chrome had similar issues, just with a much larger file. The Chrome policies worked fine for me, though. I think there’s definitely a glitch with Edge here.
