Why are my games stuck in 21:9 aspect ratio at 1440p on my Samsung 4K TV?

Hey everyone! I'm facing a strange issue with my gaming setup and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've got an RTX 4070 Ti GPU and I'm playing on a Samsung S90D 4K TV (3840 x 2160) using HDMI 2.1. The problem is that some games (like Metal Gear Solid Delta and Silent Hill) don't perform well at 4K, so I want to play them at 1440p with DLSS Quality. However, whenever I set the resolution to 2560 x 1440 in-game, it ends up displaying in a 21:9 aspect ratio with black bars on the top and bottom. My TV shows that it's set to 16:9, and the resolution is correctly set in the game menu. What's really weird is that it only happens when I focus back on the game – it looks normal when I alt-tab or move the mouse away. I've tried adjusting the NVIDIA Control Panel settings, including GPU scaling, but they keep reverting. Switching my Windows desktop to 1440p solves the issue but makes everything else look blurry. I also can't manually set some games to 1440p if I'm using borderless fullscreen, which just triggers that 21:9 problem. It seems like this used to work fine before, so I'm wondering if it's a driver bug or something else? Anyone else experienced this with a Samsung 4K TV or RTX 40 series? Is there a way to permanently fix this so games recognize 1440p as 16:9?

If fixing the settings doesn’t work and you're still having trouble, one workaround is to set your desktop resolution to 1440p whenever you game. Sure, it may look softer on your 4K TV, but it can at least allow the games to run at 1440p without having aspect ratio issues.

It sounds like you're dealing with a GPU scaling issue. Your RTX 4070 Ti might not be applying your settings correctly. Here are some tips: try setting your scaling mode to 'Aspect Ratio' in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Make sure you also select 'Perform scaling on: GPU' and tick the 'Override the scaling mode set by games and programs' option. Also, disconnect any extra monitors if you're using them, as they can mess with these settings. That might help stick the scaling settings you want!

Also, double-check your TV's settings. Make sure it's in 'PC Mode' to handle the 1440p signal better. Disable 'Input Signal Plus' for that HDMI port. This can sometimes clear up those pesky aspect ratio issues.

Don’t forget about the game-specific settings! Certain games have their own settings that could override your system-wide settings. Make sure the resolution is locked at 2560 x 1440 and set to 16:9 within each game. Running the game in exclusive fullscreen rather than borderless can also prevent scaling issues. It's worth checking those game menus!

Definitely! And keep your drivers updated too! Visit NVIDIA’s site to grab the latest drivers for your RTX 4070 Ti and check if your Samsung TV firmware is current. That can resolve a bunch of compatibility headaches.
