Why Are My Games Using the CPU Instead of the GPU?

I've recently run into a frustrating issue where my games, specifically COD, are utilizing my CPU instead of my GPU. I've tried just about everything, including reinstalling Windows and all graphics drivers with DDU in safe mode, disabling the integrated GPU in the BIOS, and even checking that my monitors are connected to the graphics card. This problem appeared suddenly after I updated my BIOS and turned on XMP, which initially caused blue screens. I disabled XMP and that fixed the blue screens, but now I can't play anything at all! I attempted to force COD to use the GPU through Windows graphics settings, but it seems like it's still not working properly. My setup includes a Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X motherboard, an i5 12600K processor, an RTX 2070 Super GPU, and 32GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM. I would love some advice on how to resolve this issue!

You might want to check your graphics settings. Go to Windows settings -> Gaming -> Graphics, and set your game to high performance. If you've done that already, make sure those settings are still applied after the BIOS update.

Yeah, that’s what I screenshot at the end of my post!

Just to double-check, are your monitors plugged into the GPU? You mentioned it, but it's crucial to confirm since it seems like this issue has popped up unexpectedly.

Yes, I made sure to connect them to the GPU. This issue is brand new for me!

I suspect it might be related to your recent BIOS changes. You could have inadvertently damaged your GPU while tweaking the settings. I recommend removing the dedicated GPU and using the onboard video to see if it performs better. If it does, then your dedicated GPU might be damaged, or there might be a setting in the BIOS messing things up. Factory reset the BIOS if you can—it could help.

I did enable Resize BAR when I updated the BIOS, then turned it off after disabling XMP. Is it possible that caused the GPU issue?

Definitely possible. Sometimes enabling certain features can lead to unexpected issues, especially if the GPU isn't fully compatible.

It's normal for games to use the CPU to some degree since it’s the brain of your system, but if you think your GPU isn’t being used at all, have you checked with an in-game overlay instead of just the task manager? The task manager can be pretty inaccurate with GPU usage. But if the game is running, that likely means it is using the GPU; it wouldn't even start if it wasn't. Just keep monitoring with a more reliable tool!

I actually did use task manager and hwinfo. The GPU temp doesn’t move, and it shows really low usage while my CPU is maxed out at 100%. That's when everything starts lagging.

Yeah, that sounds about right. If your mouse is lagging while in-game, something is definitely off. You might want to check other settings too.

Honestly, if your GPU wasn’t working, you’d probably be getting super low frame rates to the point where the game barely runs. Task manager isn't always reliable for GPU stats. You should check a dedicated monitoring tool to see what's really going on.

That’s exactly what’s happening! The game's super slow, and I have to force quit it because the lag is unbearable.
