I've been really curious about my internet speeds lately. For a long time, my laptop has only been getting about 1 MB per second, even though we have gigabit internet. It's quite far from the router and goes through several walls. However, recently I've noticed an improvement in speeds, sometimes reaching up to 80 MBps. Nothing about the router setup has changed, and I haven't moved my laptop. My mom thinks the wireless camera system we have may be affecting the speeds, but I'm not sure if that could really cause such a big difference. Any ideas on why this might be happening and how I can maintain these better speeds going forward?

You might want to consider upgrading your WiFi setup. A mesh system could help with coverage and speed, especially if you're far from the router. Or, if you're looking for a simple solution, a Powerline adapter can extend your network through electrical wiring.
It's quite possible that the wireless camera system is creating interference, which can slow down your connection. I had similar problems until I switched to a WiFi 6 mesh system, and my speeds increased dramatically! Installing it was straightforward too. You could try putting one unit in place of your main router and another halfway to ensure better coverage.

I'm not too familiar with mesh systems. I currently have a range extender, but it didn't do much for speed. Do these mesh units require cables? We don't have Ethernet wiring at home, and it would be tough to set up.
