Why Can’t I Access My SMB File Share Over VPN on MacOS Anymore?

I've been using my MacBook Pro to connect to an Active Directory (AD) file share via VPN without any issues until recently. Normally, I would just go to Finder, click on 'Go', and then 'Connect to Server' to enter the SMB path where I authenticate with my AD username and password. However, now when I try to connect, I get to the authentication screen, enter my credentials, and then I see an error: 'Unable to connect to server, check the IP, network, etc.'. I can't think of any changes on my end that could affect the file access. For reference, I'm using Forticlient for the VPN, and while I can access other work resources just fine through the VPN, the file share won't connect. Any suggestions?

Quick question: Are you the admin for the Fortigate VPN or just a user? Sometimes firewall rules can change without notice. Also, are other users experiencing the same issue, or is it just you? That could point to a larger network issue.

I'm the admin, and nothing's changed on my end. I've also confirmed other Mac users are facing this issue.

Have you been connecting with a server name or IP address? It's worth trying both to see if that helps! I know sometimes one works better than the other depending on the network setup. Just a thought!

I've tried both, but usually using smb://IP_address/share does the trick.
