I'm feeling really frustrated right now! My MacBook has two USB-C ports, and I need to use one of them for my YubiKey. However, I also want to connect my external monitor and a webcam at the same time. I've tried multiple hubs and different cables, but my monitor will only connect directly to the MacBook and not through any hub. This means I can't use my webcam at all. What am I missing here?

Make sure you're using a USB-C to USB-C cable. Have you tried connecting your monitor to the hub using a DisplayPort or HDMI cable? That might work better.
What model of USB hub are you using? For better compatibility, consider investing in a Thunderbolt dock. They tend to be higher quality and often work reliably. Brands like CalDigit and Anker have some solid options.

The problem is likely due to the type of USB-C hub you're using. Video over USB-C requires something called DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, which regular USB 3.x hubs don't support. I got a USB-C to HDMI adapter from Amazon for around $13. It also features an SD card slot and extra USB-C ports. You’ll just need to check your display settings to ensure the hub is recognized as an external monitor and set it as your main display.
