Hey everyone, I put my PC into sleep mode yesterday, and when I checked it today, I noticed that my D drive displayed as NTFS. I wasn't expecting this change, and before I knew it, it went back to normal after I backed up my important files on a flash drive. However, now it seems to be almost out of space, which is baffling since it used to have nearly 400GB of free space. After restarting my PC, the free space jumped from 6.21GB to 46.8GB, and I'm really confused why that happened.
I read online that a sudden format change can indicate that the disk is failing, but I recently bought this 1TB Samsung drive only four months ago. Some users reported their drives became inaccessible after such changes, but mine is still functional. Most of the files on the drive are just game installations and backups in RAR format, nothing that should cause issues. I also upgraded my PC last month, switching from a GeForce GTX 1060 to an AMD Radeon RX 6800. If anyone can shed light on this or has experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate it!
Here are my specs for reference:
- System: Windows 10
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE A520M S2H
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7GHz
- Graphics Card: AMD Radeon RX 6800
- RAM: 16GB
- C Drive: Kingston 128GB (1.5 years old)
- D Drive: Samsung 1TB (4 months old)

I'm not saying your drive is failing yet, but if you notice patterns of performance issues or it starts behaving erratically, you might want to consider running some diagnostics on it. It could just be a one-off glitch for now. Just keep monitoring it closely and make sure you have backups, which it sounds like you already do!
It sounds like your D drive might have just displayed the NTFS label because that's the default for modern Windows systems. Usually, drives are formatted with NTFS from the start, so it might not have changed at all. It could just have been a glitch or miscommunication in the system. Since you've backed up your important files, I wouldn’t worry too much right now. Just keep an eye on the drive for any weird behaviors. If you see frequent changes or instability, then it might be worth investigating further.
True, drives can sometimes show weird behavior due to software issues or power states like sleep mode. Keep an eye on it, but if it's working fine now, you're probably safe.
NTFS has been the standard for Windows for a long time, so it’s likely your drive was already NTFS before, just not displayed that way at the time. The sudden change in free space could be a system error; perhaps it didn't correctly report the space until after the reboot. Have you checked Disk Management to see if everything looks normal there? It might help clarify the situation!
Yeah, definitely good to check Disk Management. It can help show if there are any hidden partitions or issues with your drive.
Good tip! It's always best to have backups just in case. You could also use disk health tools to keep an eye on things.
