Hey everyone! So I recently started playing GTA V on my HP Victus (i5, 3050 4GB) and my laptop started randomly shutting off. I brushed it off a few times, but one day it shut down and just wouldn't power back on. I sent it to HP, and they informed me that three ICs experienced a thermal event, plus there's a bulging resistor. They mentioned possible circuit damage. Do you think this issue is related to playing GTA V, or could there be other factors at play?

Laptops can definitely suffer from heat damage, especially if they have poor thermal design. So, it’s not really your fault! It could just be a coincidence that it happened while playing GTA V, which can be demanding on hardware.
I experienced a similar issue, but it happened just once instead of three times. By the way, do you know what repair costs HP is looking at for this?
They're still assessing whether the entire circuit is damaged. What about you—what was the issue and how much did it cost?
From what I can see in the photo HP sent you, it does look like there might have been some kind of spill or something that caused a short circuit. Laptops are pretty susceptible to that.
HP has a notorious reputation for overheating problems. Gaming really puts a strain on laptops, so it's best to use a cooling pad and adjust fan settings to work harder. You'll likely need a new motherboard, and it's a good idea to clean out the fans and heatsinks while you're at it.
This is a super common problem with HP's consumer laptops. It seems like they’re built to last just long enough to get through the warranty, then they start failing. You are definitely not alone in this!
So it isn't GTA V causing the problem?
