Why Do My External Drives Keep Disconnecting When Plugged In Together?

Hey everyone, I'm having a problem with my external drives. Whenever I plug in both of them at the same time, they keep disconnecting and reconnecting. It's super frustrating! One drive is formatted as NTFS and the other as EXFAT. Does anyone have any idea what's going wrong or how to fix this?

Are you using a USB hub or are both drives plugged directly into their own USB ports on the PC? Connecting directly could make a difference in power delivery to the drives.

I'm using a USB hub.

One thing to check is whether both drives have the same name. I had a similar problem with two identical drives and solved it by renaming one of them. Just a thought!

They have different names—one is an SSD and the other is an HDD, formatted as NTFS and EXFAT respectively.

It sounds like the issue might be related to how they're powered. If both of your external drives are bus-powered (which means they draw power from the computer's USB port), using them together could be overloading that port, especially if you're using a regular USB hub. If possible, try using a powered USB hub instead; these have their own power source and can handle multiple drives without issues. Just remember, the USB port only needs to handle data transfer in that case!

I actually did use a USB hub for them.
