Why do my GPU fans keep randomly spinning up?

I recently got an XFX RX7800XT graphics card, and I've been noticing an annoying issue: the fans keep spinning up to about 40% several times an hour, even when the card is totally idle and under 50 degrees Celsius. I'm using Fan Control to monitor the RPM and GPU temperatures, and I can set fan speeds either directly or with a custom graph. However, the GPU seems to randomly override my settings and spin up the fans for a few seconds. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had similar issues and switched to using MSI Afterburner. I set up a custom fan curve and made sure to check the option to always force it. Since I did that, my fan issues disappeared, and it’s worked flawlessly. Might be worth a try!

I appreciate the suggestion! I did try Fan Control as well, and it has a "force" mode too, but it still doesn’t stop the random spin-ups. Even without any software controlling it, the fans still misbehave.

It sounds like your GPU might be switching in and out of hibernation mode, which can cause the fans to ramp up unexpectedly. Have you checked your power settings to see if that could be the case?
