Why do my speakers make weird noises when booting up Linux?

I've been noticing some odd farting noises coming from my speakers when I boot into Linux. My setup includes a Topping DX3 Pro+ for my headphones and active speakers connected to a FiiO DAC. My default sound output during boot is set to the Topping with the headphones. I'm running Fedora 42 Workstation—could that have anything to do with it? Is this a common issue?

That popping or farting noise is usually just hardware initialization. It's pretty common, especially during boot-up. What you're hearing is likely the speakers getting ready to output sound. It might feel odd, but it's not anything to worry about—especially since your headphones don’t make the same sound.

It sounds like it could be a ground loop issue. That happens when your computer and amp don't share the same electrical ground, causing a weird noise. In my case, I noticed something similar—once my computer booted fully, the noise went away. You might want to try changing the plugs or checking your setup.

I had a similar experience with my old HP laptop and Fedora. It happened with the built-in speakers, even when muted, but not with my external speakers. It seems to be a quirk with Fedora and certain hardware setups. It’s not just you!
