Why Do Some Tablets Have Indented Camera Bumps?

I found an old budget tablet, a Kindle Fire, that has a camera bump that's actually indented into the device. I'm curious about the reasons behind this design choice. Is it mainly to save costs, or is there another reason for using an indented camera bump?

The indented camera bump helps protect the lens when you lay the tablet on its back. A protruding lens would need tougher glass or even sapphire for protection, which can be costly and wasn't common in older budget devices. By keeping it indented, manufacturers can save on materials and costs.

That makes a lot of sense! Plus, with a smaller sensor and basic optics on budget tablets, there’s no need for a bump that takes up extra space.
