Why does disconnecting the battery on my laptop fix issues that pressing the reset or power button doesn’t?

This morning I woke up to find my laptop unresponsive, and I was really stressing out because I had important files that I hadn't backed up. I tried a few things like unplugging the charger, holding down the power button for 90 seconds, and even checking the inside for any damage, but nothing worked. The laptop appeared to be charging, as the light would react when I plugged it in, but pressing the power button did nothing. After some research, I decided to completely disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes, and then reconnect it. When I did this and held down the reset button again, a light finally came on, and to my surprise, the laptop booted up. Why would disconnecting the battery fix it when other methods didn't?

In cases like yours, it’s all about discharging everything. Some capacitors might hold a charge and prevent a proper reset. I had similar issues with my old Sony Vaio. Disconnecting and discharging would usually clear the errors for me.

Sometimes laptops just lock up really tight and need a complete power removal. I know Lenovo recommends holding their power button for 60 seconds in these cases. Disconnecting the battery gives it a full power cycle and could help clear out any glitches.

There could also be a problem with the charging circuit. If it detects an overload, it cuts power to protect the motherboard. The only way to reset that protection is often by removing the battery. Just keep an eye on it, as issues like that could mean you need a new battery or charger if it keeps happening.

It might have been a voltage issue. Holding down the power button usually helps to ‘flush out’ any stored electricity, but sometimes, it doesn't fully reset everything. Disconnecting the battery forces a complete power down, which can get things running again when the usual reset methods fail.

When you hold the reset or power button, you're still signaling the computer to attempt a restart, which can sometimes fail due to underlying issues. Disconnecting the battery completely cuts off power, which resets everything and helps clear out whatever was hanging. Just keep in mind it can risk any unsaved data, but it can be a lifesaver when your laptop is unresponsive!
